2017 was a big year for me – it was my ten year anniversary. No, no – not marriage. Ten years of being an iPhone user! I remember my first iPhone like it was yesterday queue dreamy sequence. Sure I’ve had my ups and downs, but let’s just say this recent iOS debacle has been one for the books. To the point where I, in a weak moment, considered severing ties with Apple and joining the Android family.
I run an iPhone 6S with 64GB of memory. Yes, it’s an older platform, but not that old.
In September, iOS 11 was released, so I did what any good techie would do and I promptly clicked “download and install”.
As with all major upgrades, it looked a little different and had some new bells and whistles to play with; and I knew over a few days I’d get used to it. I also noticed that it seemed to be a bit slow and my battery seemed to be draining. I chalked it up to an unforeseen bug and within a few days, Apple would kick out a revision update and all would be good.
So I waited…
I installed the revision patches and no improvement – still slow. And not just a little slow: click…wait 10 seconds (yes, I counted) and then the app opens. I can also watch my battery tick down, down, down while doing basic tasks like checking email and texting.
I go to bed with my phone at 60+% and wake up to a dead phone.
And so here we are over three months into iOS 11 and still no fix to these problems.
But wait! There’s a light up ahead!
On December 28, Apple released a statement regarding the performance and batter problems:
Apple is reducing the price of an out-of-warranty iPhone battery replacement by $50 — from $79 to $29 — for anyone with an iPhone 6 or later whose battery needs to be replaced, available worldwide through December 2018.
The page originally stated that it would be available sometime in late-January, but they released a new statement saying they expected to need more time, but that they are ready now to begin the replacement at the reduced price.
So how do you take advantage of this offer?
The best way to get this update is to make yourself an appointment at the Apple Store Genius Bar. Just click the “Start your repair request” button and choose “Bring in for repair” to setup your Genius Bar appointment.
